Am I shadowbanned? The Reddit shadowban, explained: how to check in 30 seconds, why it happens, and how to appeal

A shadowban is the quiet one. Nothing tells you. You keep posting, everything looks normal on your end, and nobody ever sees it. This page covers what it actually is, how to find out for sure in half a minute, how to tell it apart from a single removed post, and how to appeal it without making things worse.

What a Reddit shadowban is

A shadowban is an account-level action by Reddit's anti-spam systems. Your account keeps working from your point of view, you can post, comment, and vote, and everything shows up normally when you're logged in. But to everyone else, your profile returns “page not found”, and your posts and comments never appear. Moderators can see your submissions in their queue and may approve them one by one, which is why a shadowbanned account occasionally gets a post through, but by default nothing you do is visible.

It's almost always automated. Reddit's systems flag accounts whose behaviour looks like spam and hide them without notice; a human usually only gets involved if you appeal. That's also why false positives happen, and why appeals sometimes work quickly.

The 30-second check

Open a private (incognito) window, or log out in another browser. You must not be logged in as yourself.
Go to your profile: reddit.com/user/YOUR_USERNAME
Read the result. If your profile and posts load, you are not shadowbanned. If you get “page not found” or “Sorry, nobody on Reddit goes by that name”, you are.

That's the whole test. A shadowbanned account is invisible to everyone who isn't logged in as that account. Every “Reddit shadowban checker” site does exactly this and nothing more.

A second, community way to confirm: post in r/ShadowBan, where a bot replies with your status. Read the sub's rules first.

Shadowban vs. filtered post vs. suspension vs. subreddit ban

Shadowban: account-level, silent. Your profile is “not found” to others. Every post and comment is invisible. Reddit does not notify you.
Filtered or removed post: post-level. One post shows “Removed by Reddit's filters”, “Removed by moderators”, or “Removed by AutoModerator”, but your profile loads fine and other posts are visible. Far more common than a shadowban, and much easier to fix.
Suspension: Reddit tells you, in a message, and your profile says “This account has been suspended”. Temporary or permanent. Not silent. How to appeal a suspension.
Subreddit ban: one community's moderators banned you from that sub only. You get a modmail saying so. Everything else on Reddit works.

Most people who search “am I shadowbanned” actually have a filtered post. Do the 30-second check before assuming the worst.

Why accounts get shadowbanned

Reddit doesn't publish the criteria. The consistent patterns:

Spam-shaped behaviour: the same link to many subreddits quickly, posting in bursts, an account that only submits and never comments.
Vote manipulation, including asking for upvotes or using multiple accounts on your own posts.
Ban evasion: posting in a sub that banned you from another account. Reddit's detection here is aggressive and shadowbans are its usual response.
A run of removed posts across different subreddits, which is why noticing removals early matters. A single “Removed by Reddit's filters” is a warning; several in a week is a pattern.
New accounts doing any of the above. Account age and comment history are the main things that buy you tolerance.

How to appeal a shadowban

Use Reddit's official form: reddit.com/appeal (“Appeal a suspension or shadowban”). This is the only channel that works; modmail to a subreddit can't lift a sitewide shadowban.
Be short, honest, and specific. Say what you think triggered it, that you understand the rule, and what you'll do differently. If you don't know, say so and ask.
Stop the behaviour first. An appeal while you're still doing the thing rarely succeeds.
Wait. Responses take days to weeks. Don't create a new account to keep posting in the meantime; that's ban evasion and it makes the original appeal fail.

How to stay off the radar, legitimately

Pace yourself. A few posts a day, spread out, beats ten in an hour every time. Reddit's filters are pattern detectors, and bursts are the pattern.
Comment like a person. Accounts that only submit links look like bots to a machine. Real conversation is the cheapest insurance there is.
Vary titles, space reposts. Identical titles across subs and the same link everywhere in one sitting are the classic triggers.
Notice removals early. One filtered post is a nudge. If you see it the same hour, you can slow down before it becomes a pattern. If you find out a week later, the pattern already happened.
Check your own visibility on a schedule. The 30-second test above, done automatically, with a notification the moment it changes. That's the difference between losing a day and losing a month.

How do I check if I'm shadowbanned on Reddit?

Open your profile (reddit.com/user/yourname) in a private window or while logged out. If it loads, you're not shadowbanned. If it says “page not found”, you are.

Does Reddit tell you when you're shadowbanned?

No. That's what makes it a shadowban. Suspensions are announced; shadowbans aren't.

What's the difference between a shadowban and a suspension?

A suspension is announced: Reddit messages you and your profile says the account is suspended. A shadowban is silent: everything looks normal to you and invisible to everyone else. Both are appealed through the same form at reddit.com/appeal.

Can a subreddit shadowban me?

Not sitewide. A subreddit can quietly filter or remove your posts via AutoModerator so they never appear, which feels the same within that sub, but your profile and posts elsewhere stay visible. That's a filtered-post problem, not a shadowban.

How long does a Reddit shadowban last?

Indefinitely, until it's lifted on appeal. Some are reversed quickly when they were automated false positives; others aren't reversed at all. Appeal once, properly, and wait.

Will a new account fix it?

No. Creating a new account to post around a shadowban is ban evasion, which Reddit detects and shadowbans again, and it usually sinks the appeal on the original account.
