“Removed by Reddit’s filters”: what it means and what to do

You posted something, and instead of upvotes you got this:

Short version: Reddit's own automated systems, not the subreddit's moderators, decided your post looked like spam or otherwise risky, and hid it from everyone but you. The post isn't deleted. It's sitting in the subreddit's moderation queue, and a moderator can approve it in one click. Here's how to read the situation and what actually helps.

What the notice means

Reddit runs sitewide filters that sit in front of every subreddit. They look at the account posting, the content, the link, and the pattern of activity, and they act before a human ever sees the post. When they trigger, the post is removed to the mod queue. Three things follow from that:

• Nobody else can see it. It won't appear in the subreddit feed, in search, or on your public profile. Open the link in a private window and you'll get a “removed” or “not found” page.
• The subreddit's moderators can see it, flagged as filtered, and can approve it. Many do, if you ask.
• It's about the post, not necessarily your account. One filtered post doesn't mean you're shadowbanned. Several in a row, across different subreddits, is a different story (see below).

Why it happens

Reddit doesn't publish the rules, but the patterns are consistent across the removals we've watched:

• New or low-karma account. The filters are far more suspicious of accounts that are days old or have little comment history.
• The same link posted to many subreddits in a short window. This is the classic trigger. Cross-posting the same content to ten subs in an hour looks exactly like spam to a machine, even when every sub allows it.
• Posting in bursts. Many posts per hour, day after day, especially if some get removed.
• Certain domains and link shorteners. Links to sites Reddit associates with spam, or that hide their destination.
• Recent removals. Once a few of your posts have been removed, the filters get stricter for a while. It compounds.

What to do right now

1. Don't repost it. Deleting and reposting the same thing tells the filter it was right, and each removal makes the next one likelier. Leave it.
2. Message the subreddit's moderators. Use modmail, be brief and polite: “My post was removed by Reddit's filters, not by a rule as far as I can tell. Would you take a look and approve it if it's fine?” Include the link. Most mods approve legitimate posts within a day.
3. Check whether it's just this post or your whole account. Log out (or open a private window) and open your profile. If the profile loads and your other posts are visible, it's post-level. If the profile shows “page not found”, your account is shadowbanned; that's a separate problem with a separate fix.
4. Slow down for a few days. Fewer posts, spaced out, and comment normally in between. This is the single most effective thing you can do; the filters visibly relax.

How to stop it happening again

• Space out reposts of the same content. Same link to a new sub is fine; same link to eight subs before lunch is not. A few per day, spread across hours, is the safe shape.
• Vary your titles. Identical titles across subreddits are one of the easiest things for a filter to spot.
• Build real history. Comments, replies, votes on other people's posts. Accounts that only ever submit links trip the filters constantly.
• Know when it happens. Reddit doesn't notify you. The post just sits there looking normal to you while nobody else can see it. Finding out days later is how one filtered post turns into a wasted week.
