“Removed by moderators” on Reddit: what it means and what to do

Your post is gone and the label says a moderator removed it. This one, at least, involved a human decision (or a rule a human wrote). That makes it more predictable than Reddit's own filters, and it also means how you respond matters more.

What the notice means

A moderator of that subreddit, or a moderator-configured tool acting on their behalf, removed your post for a subreddit reason: a rule you broke, a format they don't allow, a flair you didn't set, a verification you don't have, or simply their judgement. The post is hidden from the feed and from other users. It stays visible on your own profile, which is why people often don't notice for days.

Sometimes you'll also get a comment or a message with a removal reason. Often you won't. Silence isn't a sign of anything sinister; most subreddits just don't send reasons.

Find the reason before you do anything

Look for a stickied comment or a modmail on the post. Many subs attach the rule number.
Read the subreddit rules, all of them, including the wiki if there is one. Verification requirements, minimum karma, title formats, watermark policies, and posting frequency limits are where most creators get caught.
Check the flair and posting-day requirements. “Self-promo only on Sundays” and “flair required” are extremely common and are usually enforced automatically.
Check how often you've posted there. Many subs have a stated limit (one post per day, three per week). Going over it is the quickest way to a removal and, repeated, a ban.

What to do

Don't repost. Reposting content a mod just removed is the single most common reason creators get banned from a subreddit. It reads as ignoring the mods.
If you genuinely can't see which rule applies, ask. Modmail, one short paragraph: what you posted, that you read the rules, and that you'd like to know what to fix. Don't argue, don't ask them to reconsider in the same message.
If it was a fixable mistake (wrong flair, bad title format), fix it and post once, and say in modmail that you did.
If the sub simply doesn't want this content, move on. There are hundreds of subs; one that keeps removing you isn't worth a ban.

How to stop it happening again

Keep a note per subreddit of its limits and quirks: posts per day, verification, flair, the days self-promo is allowed. You will forget; a note won't.
Watch your own posting pace. Mods notice accounts that post to their sub several times a day, and they notice the same content arriving on a schedule.
Notice removals quickly. A post that was removed an hour ago is a modmail away from being restored. A post you discover was removed last week is just gone.

Can I see why my post was removed?

Sometimes. Check the post for a moderator comment and your inbox for a modmail. If there's nothing, the rules page is your best guide, and a short modmail asking which rule applied is fine.

Does a moderator removal affect my account elsewhere?

Not directly. Removals are per subreddit. But a pattern of removals across many subs is one of the signals Reddit's sitewide filters use, so repeated mod removals can lead to more filtered posts everywhere.

Is it worth appealing?

If you think it was a mistake, one polite modmail is worth it. More than one isn't. Moderators are volunteers and arguing is the fastest way from a removal to a ban.

Why didn't Reddit tell me?

Reddit doesn't notify authors of most removals. The post keeps looking normal on your profile. That's why most people find out late, and why removal alerts exist.
