“Removed by AutoModerator”: why it happens and how to fix it

AutoModerator is a bot every subreddit can configure. When it removes your post, it's applying a rule the subreddit's moderators wrote, instantly and without judgement. The good news: AutoMod rules are mechanical, so once you know which one you hit, the fix is usually obvious.

The rules that usually trigger it

Minimum karma or account age. The most common one. “You need 100 comment karma to post here”, or an account older than 30 days.
Missing or wrong flair. Many subs remove unflaired posts automatically and restore them once you add flair.
Title format. Required tags like [OC] or [F], a required prefix, or banned words in the title.
Keywords, domains, and link types. Certain words, shortened links, specific hosting sites, or any link at all for accounts under a threshold.
Posting frequency. “One post per 24 hours” rules are routinely enforced by AutoMod, and they count from your last post, not from midnight.
Verification. Some subs require a verified flair before you can post; AutoMod removes everything from unverified accounts.

How to tell which rule you hit

AutoMod usually leaves a comment on the removed post explaining the rule. Check the post page while logged in.
Check your inbox for an automated message from the subreddit.
Read the sidebar and the posting rules; the thresholds are usually stated, if not always prominently.
Compare with your last post there. If that one went through and this one didn't, the difference (title, flair, timing) is the rule.

What to do

Fix the concrete thing. Add the flair, fix the title, wait out the frequency window. Then post again once.
If it's a karma or age threshold, don't fight it. Comment elsewhere for a while and come back. Modmail asking for an exception rarely works and marks you as someone who didn't read the rules.
If the comment says to message the mods, do exactly that, briefly. Some subs configure AutoMod to filter rather than remove, and a mod will approve on request.
Don't repost repeatedly while trying to guess the rule. Each removal counts against you, both with that sub and with Reddit's sitewide filters.

How to stop it happening again

Keep a note per subreddit: required flair, title tags, the frequency limit, whether verification is needed. Most AutoMod removals are the same mistake made twice.
Track your posting cadence per sub. If a sub allows one post a day, know when your last one was before you submit.
Get told when it happens. AutoMod removals are instant, so a removal alert within minutes means you can fix and repost while the timing still works.

Questions

Is an AutoModerator removal the same as a moderator removal?

Functionally yes: it's the subreddit's rule, applied by a bot the mods configured. The difference is that AutoMod removals are usually explained in a comment and are mechanical, so they're easier to fix.

Does AutoModerator remove posts silently?

It can. Subs can configure AutoMod to filter a post without leaving a comment, and the post keeps looking normal to you. If you see no comment and no message, check the post in a private window to confirm it's actually hidden.

Will an AutoMod removal hurt my account?

One won't. A pattern of removals across many subs feeds into Reddit's sitewide filters, which is why it's worth fixing the cause rather than reposting until something sticks.

Can I ask the mods to whitelist me?

Some subs do this, usually for verified users. It's worth one polite modmail after you've met whatever the sub's stated requirements are, not before.
